Matt Gehring is a New York–based educator and director dedicated to guiding artists in developing their voices and creating original work. He currently serves as Comedy Division Director at the Stella Adler Studio.
At Brooklyn College, Matt was Adjunct Faculty in Introduction to Acting, designing curriculum for one of the nation’s most diverse student bodies. At NYU’s Experimental Theater Wing, where he once trained as a student, he now returns as a teacher, continuing a tradition of ensemble-driven performance having taught both the collegiate level and for Tisch Summer High. At UCB, he has taught sketch writing from beginner to advanced levels and created the Acting for Sketch curriculum. At NYFA, he developed original courses in Improvisation, blending stage and on-camera techniques, and Writing for Actors, where he taught aspiring actors the basic mechanics of screenwriting.
Beyond the classroom, Matt co-founded and led CAMP (Comedy Artist Makers Program) at Ars Nova, a year-long residency that nurtured the next generation of comedic playwrights and performers, producing 25 new works over five years. As a longtime teaching artist with Story Pirates, he spent over a decade transforming student writing into performances across NYC schools, emphasizing student creativity and storytelling.
Matt holds an MFA in Theater Directing from Brooklyn College, where he was a Shubert Scholar and Graduate Teaching Fellow, and a BFA in Drama from NYU Tisch. His teaching and mentorship are guided by an ethos of “maximum preparation, maximum flexibility,” empowering students to take risks, find their voices, and bring new work to life.
